exhaustion, mini-stroke, depression

What brought you to Dr. Akemi’s office?

I had been suffering from intense exhaustion for 10+ years. The lack of energy started after I had a molar pregnancy. I felt like my entire body chemistry changed overnight but doctor after doctor told me I was just depressed due to the loss of the pregnancy. Basically, “it was all in my head.” The doctors put me on every type of prescription medicine they could think of, but the only result was added side effects. After experiencing a mini stroke due to one of the medications, I had had enough. I stopped all medication and just dealt with the tiredness. I worked with acupuncturists, chiropractors and massage therapists to try to manage the symptoms, but over the years, I only became more tired and more frustrated. I had given up on finding the answer and had changed my life to accommodate my illness. I took a demotion and cut down the number of hours I worked; I reduced the number of family activities I participated in; I forced myself to accept that this is how my life was going to be. Then I had a friend tell me about Dr. Akemi. The last thing I wanted to do was go to another doctor, but my husband urged me to go see her… just one more doctor, just try to find the answer one more time.

What was different about Dr. Akemi? How is her approach different from other physicians or healers?

The difference was that Dr. Akemi looked at EVERYTHING. She looked at my blood. She looked at my diet. She looked at the emotional and spiritual components to my symptoms. She listened and validated what I was experiencing. I was honestly very skeptical of her after our first meeting. I even had my husband come in and meet with her to tell me if he felt she was for real. It was just hard to believe that there was someone who would look at my symptoms from every angle and really try to help figure out what was going on. For years, I would tell my husband that I needed to find a team of doctors who would talk to each other about my case and look at it from every angle and actually care about finding an answer. I ended up not needing a team of doctors, just needed Dr. Akemi. But I recognize that if I hadn’t gone to all of the other doctors, experienced all of the side effects from all of those medications and worked with so many different health care professionals along the way, I wouldn’t have been able to make the very difficult changes I needed to make in order to feel better. I wouldn’t have been as committed to my own healing. I basically wouldn’t have listened to Dr. Akemi.

Do you agree that working on different levels of stress (emotional blockages, nourishment/nutrition/food, physical and energetic structure) was an important part of your healing? Why?

Working on every aspect of my life was ESSENTIAL to my healing. I had to make HUGE life changes in order to feel better. I had to reduce my stress levels; I had to change my diet; I had to be open to acupuncture, NET and chiropractic. I had to be willing to change all aspects of how I treated my body and my spirit to let it heal. I did try qigong but that wasn’t for me. I found my own way to meditate that works for me, but I had to incorporate that component into my life or I know I wouldn’t be experiencing these great results. Prior to seeing Dr. Akemi, I had tried different diets, acupuncture, massage and chiropractic, but those practices on their own and in isolation didn’t help. Treating the entire body and spirit as one has worked for me.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Dr. Akemi’s work is very different from the medicine most of us are familiar with. For me, it is hard to share with others the types of treatments she uses. I know in my circle of friends and family, I would be harshly judged for believing in Dr. Akemi’s work. But the bottom line is that it worked for me where nothing else did. I feel better than I have in 10 years. I now have the energy to participate in family activities. I’ve started to enjoy the personal hobbies I gave up years ago due to lack of energy or desire. I’ve learned when I need to rest and to listen to my body. I’ve learned to trust my body. I’ve learned how to play and accept joy into my life. I can’t thank Dr. Akemi enough, but at the same time, I give myself the same gratitude. Dr. Akemi showed me the path to getting better, but I had to do the work. I had to make the changes. I had to commit to myself and I continue to have to recommit on a daily basis.

cold, sinus congestion, pms

I’d had a cold which lingered for weeks. The only remaining symptom was some constant, low-grade sinus pressure. For those who didn’t know me, I appeared to be functioning fine and didn’t sound congested, but by the end of the day, my husband always noted, “You’re still sick; you need to see a doctor.” I wasn’t willing to take an antibiotic, and was willing to wait it out. But I was getting tired of it, as it was keeping my energy down and by the end of the work day, I was shot. I mentioned it only in passing, as I was relatively new in my work with you, and didn’t know that anything and everything is worth a mention! You suggested some acupuncture. One needle in each sinus, and that night it all started draining. I had about one good day of blowing my nose like mad, and then POOF, no more symptoms! It was practically immediate.

I also had premenstrual breast tenderness. Like bad. Like really bad. Like go out and buy new bras bad, like don’t want to move, don’t want to work out, don’t want to do anything bad. Like worse than ever experienced, and not showing any sign of letting up. One session of acupuncture, and it was better the next day, and within a day and half, ALL SYMPTOMS GONE. Only then do you realize, too, that it had actually been a total body kind of bloated and sluggish. All resolved.
